THE SACRED SOLAR CAROL OF DOBROGEA
Deciphering the Pre-Christian Archaic Symbols of the Winter Solstice
Here is one of the oldest pre-Christian solar carols, collected from the archaic heritage of Dobrogea and the Danube Valley:
CAROL TEXT AND TRANSLATION
Pe Marea Dalbă,
Upon the White Sea,
Răsărit-a, doamne,
There has risen, O Lord,
Leagăn de mătase,
A silk cradle,
Căptușit cu floare.
Lined with flowers.
Dar în leagăn cine-mi șade?
But in the cradle who resides?
Șade, șade-un cerb rotat.
Sits, sits a stag with circular antlers.
Între coarne ce-mi purta?
What did he carry between his horns?
Purta Soarele-n frunte,
He carried the Sun on his forehead,
Luna pe spinare,
The Moon on his back,
Două stele-n coarne,
Two stars in his horns,
Luceafărul la mijloc.
The Morning Star in the middle.
DECIPHERING THE SYMBOLS VERSE BY VERSE
Pe Marea Dalbă / Upon the White Sea
The White Sea (Marea Dalbă or Alba) is the mythical name of the primordial waters in Danubian folklore, a direct reference to the fluvial-pontic axis (the Danube River and the Black Sea). The word "dalbă" (white, radiant, pure) designates the sacred, unblemished state of the world's beginnings, before creation.
Răsărit-a, doamne, / Leagăn de mătase
There has risen, O Lord, / A silk cradle
The verb "to rise" (a răsări) is reserved exclusively for celestial bodies. The cradle carried by the primordial waters is an allegory for the Cosmic Dawn and the Primordial Egg. It is the sacred birthplace where the new light is forged during the Winter Solstice.
Șade, șade-un cerb rotat
Sits, sits a stag with circular antlers
The stag is the zoomorphic embodiment of the solar deity among ancient Carpatho-Danubian peoples and acts as a psychopomp (a guide of souls). The epithet "rotat" (wheel-like) does not merely describe the animal's physical appearance, but signifies the circular movement of the Sun (the solar wheel, the spiral, and the rosette present on Neolithic and Getic ceramics).
Purta Soarele-n frunte
He carried the Sun on his forehead
The forehead — the center of consciousness and power — bears the solar disk. In this archaic worldview, the stag carries the star of day through the solstitial night, bringing it out of the deep waters to restart the cycle of life.
Luna pe spinare
The Moon on his back
Represents the feminine, nocturnal, and complementary principle. While the Sun keeps watch in front, opening the path ahead, the Moon maintains the rhythm of the tides and measured time upon the back of the divine animal.
Două stele-n coarne
Two stars in his horns
The branches of the stag's antlers are assimilated into the boughs of the World Tree (Axis Mundi). The two stars placed at their tips represent the astronomical markers of the equinoxes or the boundary posts of the firmament.
Luceafărul la mijloc
The Morning Star in the middle
The Morning Star (the planet Venus) is the celestial guide announcing the victory of Light over Darkness before dawn. Placed at the center, it unifies the astral pantheon into a precise celestial map preserved in the oral memory of the Danubian hearth.
